SUMMARY:Graham Storey lecture with Eleanor Catton
LOCATION:Cambridge University: Howard Theatre\, Downing College
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture Eleanor will examine the uniquely dual relatio
nship between first-person narration and plot as exemplified in the novels
of the Brontë sisters\, from Anne’s diaries and letters to Emily’s f
rames and Charlotte’s confidences and suppressions\, exploring the ways
in which the first person brings narration itself into the realm of dramat
ic action and productively exploits the tension between what appears to ha
ve been fated and what appears to have been willed. Eleanor Catton is the
author of three novels: The Rehearsal\, The Luminaries\, which won the 201
3 Booker Prize\, and Birnam Wood. As a screenwriter\, she adapted The Lumi
naries for television and Jane Austen's Emma for a 2020 feature film starr
ing Anya Taylor-Joy. Born in Canada\, she grew up in New Zealand and now l
ives in Cambridge. There will also be a drinks reception after the lecture
. Tickets are free and all students\, staff and alumni of the University w
 elcome.
