SUMMARY:Lunchtime seminar: National and domestic hospitalities in women’
 s interfaith spaces
LOCATION:Cambridge University: Faculty of Divinity
DESCRIPTION:The Cambridge Interfaith Programme & The Faculty of Divinity c
ohost an Inter-Religious Research seminar for UK Inter Faith Week 2026. Ab
stract In my dissertation research\, I found that interpersonal hospitalit
y is tightly woven into the fabric of women's interfaith groups\, with act
ivities such as food sharing central to the these groups’ practices. Hos
pitality also plays a role in constructing the political and ethical orien
tation of women's interfaith groups: in particular\, the idea of welcoming
migrants and refugees is a common thread across the field. Nevertheless\,
the ethos of national and interpersonal hospitality engages the “women
of faith” in questions of boundary formation and bordering: who is welco
me\, and under what conditions? How do ideas of religious belonging and na
tional identity shape the answers to these questions? In this seminar\, I
will use Derrida's idea of “hostipitality” to analyse this tension\, a
rguing that women of faith use hospitable practices to rehearse the idea o
f Britain as a place of welcome for different faiths: a “shared interfai
th home” in which women act as host figures. About the speaker Peach Hoy
le is a researcher whose work considers gender\, religious belonging and i
nter-religious encounter in Britain. They recently submitted their PhD the
sis which considers the role of women’s interfaith organisations in the
contemporary British public sphere. Peach is currently based in the Facult
y of Divinity\, University of Cambridge\, and their PhD was supervised by
Professor Esra Özyürek and Professor Daniel Weiss. Their undergraduate d
egree was in Theology and Religious Studies at the Faculty of Divinity\, a
nd their Masters was in Religious Studies at the Faculty of Theology and R
eligion at Oxford. About the series The Inter-Religious Research seminar i
s convened by Professor Esra Özyürek. It is a joint initiative of the Fa
culty of Divinity and the Cambridge Interfaith Programme. Guests welcome.
Light refreshments will be provided to those attending on site. Please reg
 ister to receive Zoom information.
