 res that celebrate our newest Professors\, recognising their academic jour
 ney and showcasing their research.\nAbstract\n\nAortic dissection is a uni
 que condition that is the poor cousin of other cardiovascular diseases\, b
 ut together patients\, family members\, clinicians and policy makers are
  changing the outlook for those with the condition. Increased funding has 
 become available in the past  few years with a large increase in the 
 number of dissection specific studies being run. Patients and physicians h
 ave joined together to design and deliver research and education.\n \n\n\
 nThe future is certainly brighter for patients and families of patient wit
 h this important condition. This lecture is a celebration of all the work 
 that has been done by patients\, families\, clinicians and everyone who 
 works in this area to try and change the outlook for patients with aortic 
 dissection. \nBiography\nColin Bicknell is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon 
 and Professor of Vascular Surgery at the Imperial Vascular Unit\, London.
   He is clinical lead for the National Vascular Registry\, co-chair of t
 he Aortic Special Interest Group to lead patient prioritised aortic resear
 ch in the UK\, ex-President of the British Society of Endovascular Therapy
  and ex-Chair of The Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust Research Advisory 
 Group.  He directs a translational aortic clinical research programme\, 
 leading research trials\, including the EARNEST trial\, a long-term trial 
 of the benefits of early stenting after acute uncomplicated type-B aortic 
 dissection.
