SUMMARY:Frontiers in Natural Sciences: Dean’s Annual Lecture – AI and
 the Long Conversation of Mathematics
LOCATION:Imperial College: Royal College of Music
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Frontiers in Natural Sciences: The Dean’s An
nual Lecture 2026\, delivered by Geordie Williamson on the subject of ‘A
I and the long conversation of mathematics’.\nThe lecture will be follow
ed by a panel discussion titled ‘AI in Mathematics: What next?’. Profe
ssor Williamson will be joined on the panel by Ulrike Tillmann\, Professor
of Mathematics at the University of Oxford\, Director of the Isaac Newton
Institute at the University of Cambridge\, former President of LMS\, and
President-Elect of the International Mathematical Union.\; Ana Caraiani\,
Royal Society University Research Fellow\; and Kevin Buzzard\, Professor o
f Pure Mathematics at Imperial College London.\nThe in-person event is now
fully booked\, however you can sign up to watch the Livestream using the
‘Register now’ button.\nAbstract\nMathematics has been called humanity
’s long conversation. Observations of Euclid\, Pythagoras\, Euler and Po
incaré still occupy the minds of mathematicians today. This conversation
has experienced shocks and challenges\, including the crisis of foundation
s in the early 20th century\, and the first computer assisted proofs in th
e second half of the 20th century. We are currently in the midst of anothe
r shock\, with the rise of formal proof and the first signs of AI systems
helping to produce research-level mathematics. This raises questions of fu
ndamental importance: How should mathematicians respond to AI? Will AI sys
tems help (or hinder) our understanding of the mathematical world? William
son will discuss some recent developments at the interface of mathematics
and AI\, with the aim of having a clearer picture of this unique point in
the history of mathematics.\nSynopsis\nGeordie Williamson works in the str
uctural side of mathematics\, and has done early work at the interface of
mathematics and AI. He has made several fundamental contributions includin
g his proof (with Ben Elias) of the Kazhdan-Lusztig positivity conjecture\
, his algebraic proof of the Jantzen conjectures\, and his discovery of co
unter-examples to the expected bounds in the Lusztig conjecture in modular
representation theory. This last result came as a shock to a whole commun
ity of researchers\, and has since shifted the focus away from old conject
ures.\nFor his work he has been awarded the Chevalley Prize of the America
n Mathematical Society\, the European Mathematics Society Prize\, the Clay
Research Award\, the New Horizons Prize in Mathematics (with Ben Elias)\,
the Chauvenet Prize and two ICBS Frontiers of Science Awards. He addresse
d the International Congress of Mathematicians as a plenary speaker in 201
8\, and as a public speaker in 2022 and 2026. More recently\, he was award
ed an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship and the Max Planck H
umboldt Research Award.\nSchedule\n16:30: Lecture Theatre Doors Open\n17:0

ception in the Carolean & 1851 Courtyard\nFrontiers in Natural Sciences: D
 ean’s Annual Lecture\nEstablished in 2022\, the Dean’s Lecture explore
s the breadth and variety of activity at the frontiers of natural sciences
.\nThis annual lecture series sees world-renowned speakers\, who are chose
n by each department in the Faculty\, discuss the future of science and th
e fundamental work that underpins our most ambitious endeavours.
