SUMMARY:Can incentives encourage open research practice?
LOCATION:London School of Economics: In-person and online public event (LS
E campus\, venue tbc to ticketholders)
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 27 October 2026 12pm - 1pmDiscussantsProfessor Liam De
laneySteven HillDr Banaz JalilChairProfessor Elizabeth StokoeCan incentive
s encourage open research practice? Exploring solutions beyond compliance.
Academic researchers are pulled in many directions\, with teaching\, resea
rch\, administrative duties\, and an ever-changing sectoral environment le
ading to larger and larger workloads. In such an environment\, introducing
new ways of working that come with open research must have clear benefits
for the researcher. In this environment\, the question of promoting open
research practices becomes one of incentives. Today\, funders often requir
e open access publication\, and some require open data deposits\, however
these requirements may appear as a stick (do this or lose your funding) ra
ther than a carrot. Funders\, journal editors\, and university managers ar
e best placed to offer incentives for open research\, but how can this be
done in a fair way that acknowledges the diversity of open research practi
ces in different fields\, encourages rather than threatens\, and works wit
h researchers rather than dictating terms?Join us for this discussion with
our panel of researchers and policy makers. There will be plenty of space
for questions from the room and online.A light lunch will be provided for
in-person attendees. The event will be hybrid.PanelLiam Delaney is a prof
