SUMMARY:'No future' for transatlantic relations? Reflections in advance of
  the US mid-term elections
LOCATION:London School of Economics: In-person and online public event (Al
 umni Theatre\, CKK)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 8 October 2026 6.30pm - 8pmSpeakerKlaus WelleChairPro
fessor Chris AndersonThe transatlantic partnership provided security for E
urope for 80 years. Yet today\, the United States regards Europe as only i
ts fourth security priority. Economically strained by Trump’s tariffs an
d challenged by renewed claims on Greenland\, European trust in the United
States has fallen to an all-time low. With crucial midterm elections on t
he horizon\, an important question emerges: what might a renewed partnersh
ip of equals look like?Meet our speaker and chairKlaus Welle is Visiting P
rofessor in Practice at the LSE European Institute. He was previously Secr
etary General of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2022. His previous r
oles in Brussels include serving as chief of staff to the President of the
European Parliament\, as Director General for EU Internal Policies in the
Parliament's administration\, and as Secretary General successively of th
e European People's Party (EPP) transnational political party and of the E
PP political group in the European Parliament.Chris Anderson is the Ralf D
ahrendorf Professor of European Politics and Society. A student of politic
al behaviour\, Anderson’s research has centred on the micro-foundations
of markets and democracy. Past research projects have investigated the pop
ularity of governments\, the dynamics of public opinion about European int
egration\, and people’s satisfaction with democracy. In other streams of
research\, he has investigated the connection between welfare states and
citizen behaviour and the political attitudes and behaviours of immigrants
in Europe.More about this eventEstablished in 1991\, the LSE European Ins
