The 2024 Mark Cousins Annual Lecture

Architectural Association School of Architecture

October 18

Mark Cousins Lecture Hall

Taking both personal and societal experiences of loss, invisibility and silence as a point of departure to think through architecture, Jonas Dahlberg will speak about the potential of working with the built environment as a camouflaging practice; creating spaces that are architectural double agents.

Jonas Dahlberg lives in Stockholm where he is Professor at the Department for Research and Advanced Studies in Art and Architecture at the Royal Institute of Art. First known as a video artist and then for his winning proposal for the memorial for the victims of the terrorist attacks in Oslo and Utøya he is the founding director of the multidisciplinary lab Of Public Interest (OPI) as well as two other OPI entities that operates as a non-profit and a studio.

Please note that this lecture will be ticketed with tickets released at 6pm on Monday 14 October. It will have restricted capacity with priority given to current AA students and staff as well as fully registered AA Members to register to attend. For those unable to obtain a ticket, the talk will be relayed, and will be recorded to be published later.

To commemorate the legacy of Mark Cousins’ teaching at the AA, the Mark Cousins Annual Lecture was established in 2022. This annual event is an opportunity to invite speakers whose work bears a kindred approach to Mark’s thinking about space, architecture, theory or culture, giving voice to the next generation and bringing Mark’s teaching to audiences old and new. An ongoing fundraising campaign aims to ensure that this annual event remains a highlight in the AA public programme for the next three decades. To learn more about the late Mark Cousins, one of the AA’s most influential architectural educators and critics, please visit the Mark Cousins Lecture Archive – a unique set of over 250 lecture recordings spanning his career available to watch online at www.aaschool.ac.uk/markcousins. There is also a book containing an edited selection of the lectures - Mark Cousins: Friday Lectures (ed. Parveen Adams) 2022.
