This public lecture (based on joint work conducted by K. Thelen and J.S. Tan) explores the origins and implications of a new cloud business model that is powering the advance of AI, elaborating how the features of this model differ from the traditional platform model out of which it grew. It considers the technological, political and distributional impacts of the rise of this new business model. Finally, it will offer a preliminary analysis of how the cloud business model is developing along different trajectories in the United States, Europe, and China.
