This event is a book talk on Dr Jay Song's new publication Korean Migration to Australia: A Human Security Perspective (https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-981-92-1150-0) Abstract: This book is the first of its kind to historically and systematically analyse Korean migration to Australia since 1876. It offers a comprehensive overview of the past 150 years’ transnational migration from the Joseon dynasty and today’s South Korea to the then British colony and modern-day Australia. It does so by categorically analysing politico-economic human security factors of youth migration. Each chapter begins with an individual story of youth migration. They include the first naturalised Korean British subject in 1894, the first Korean international student in Melbourne, a former mascot boy for the Australian army, and holiday makers in rural Australia. Author: Jay Song (???: ???) is a retired professor in Korean Studies at the Australian National University and political consultant on migration and human rights. Prior to her current position, Jay was Korea Foundation Associate Professor in Korean Studies at the University of Melbourne (2017-2023), Director of Migration Policy at the Lowy Institute in Sydney (2016-2017), and Assistant Professor in Political Science at Singapore National University (2013-2016). She holds a PhD in Politics and International Relations from the University of Cambridge.
