Translational Longevity: From Ageing Phenomics to Geroprotector Discovery

This special seminar, part of the ARK Lecture Series, will be hosted by Prof Giovanni Mann and Dr Richard Siow, Physiological Oxygen Laboratory, King's British Heart Foundation Centre for Research Excellence, School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences (SCMMS), Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine.

We welcome Dr Lyu to King's as ARK and SCMMS establish healthy ageing and longevity research collaborations between SUSTech and SIA. 

Seminar Synopsis and Biography

Ageing is a complex, multi-system process, yet much of geroscience remains confined within single-model paradigms. In this talk, Dr Lyu will present a phenomics-driven framework for understanding ageing heterogeneity, drawing on cross-species models across metabolic, immune, and sex-specific dimensions to identify translational interventions for healthy ageing.

Building on this foundation, he will discuss how AI-powered discovery platforms are accelerating the decoding of novel ageing mechanisms as well as the identification of novel geroprotectors, spanning both pharmacological candidates and nutraceutical interventions, while highlighting the translational challenges of moving from mechanistic insight to real-world application. Finally, he will introduce a One Health perspective on longevity science, illustrating how companion animal ageing can offer complementary insights into the biology of healthspan extension.

This talk aims to spark discussion on how academic and industry-driven approaches can converge to close the gap between fundamental ageing research and translational geroprotector discovery.

Dr Lyu completed his postdoctoral training as an EMBO and Marie Curie Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, Germany, with Prof. Dame Linda Partridge.

His research bridges academic geroscience with industrial translation, focusing on: 1) Metabolic and immune regulation of ageing, with an emphasis on sex-difference mechanisms; 2) AI-driven discovery platforms for novel geroprotective drugs and nutraceuticals; 3) One Health longevity, extending healthspan applications across human and companion animal health.

He has published extensively as first/corresponding author in journals including Nature Aging, Ageing Research Reviews, and eLife, with his work on Rapamycin-mediated interventions recognised as an Annual Research Highlight by the Max Planck Society.
