Westerland 2012 (15) 90m Set on the cold, deserted island of Sylt in winter, Westerland follows Cem, a disciplined young trainee at the local authorities, and Jesús, a drifting stranger who invents a lot of stories. When Cem finds Jesús on the brink of suicide, he takes him home, and an intense, tender relationship develops between them. As Cem becomes increasingly determined to save Jesús, his carefully planned life begins to unravel. Their growing dependence isolates them from friends, family and reality itself. Against Sylt’s stark, melancholic landscape in winter, Tim Staffel’s film explores love, loneliness and co-dependency, asking how far we can go to save someone we love. About Maren de Vincent-Humphreys Maren de Vincent-Humphreys is a Fellow, Tutor and Director of Studies at Jesus College.
