We’re delighted to invite you to a one-off manzai lecture and workshop at Jesus College with Manu Shimaoka, Shira-chan, and Yumi Fujita (Team Franpone), visiting from Japan. Tickets are available below. Manzai is a traditional Japanese comedy style with two performers: the “BOKE” (funny one) and the “TUKKOMI” (traditional man). The BOKE amuses the audience with silly remarks, unexpected actions, or surprising statements. In contrast, the TSUKKOMI acts as the logical counterpart, correcting the BOKE?s antics and steering the conversation. Their dynamic interaction and playful exchanges create the humour that defines MANZAI. The event will introduce manzai and its various forms. While the talk will be in English, some Japanese words will also be introduced to help learn some Japanese vocab, as you create your own manzai comedy skits. Running order: 1. Introduction & Explanation of Manzai (15 minutes): Participants learn about the performers and the basics of manzai, a traditional Japanese comedy style. 2. Forming Duos & Choosing Team Names (15 minutes): Participants pair up and decide on creative team names. 3. Creating a 3-Line Skit (15 minutes): Each duo writes a short manzai routine, focusing on humorous exchanges between the “boke” and “tsukkomi” roles. 4. Performing Skits (15 minutes): Participants present their skits to the group, showcasing their comedic creativity. 5. Q&A (30 mins)
