In this lecture Eleanor will examine the uniquely dual relationship between first-person narration and plot as exemplified in the novels of the Brontë sisters, from Anne’s diaries and letters to Emily’s frames and Charlotte’s confidences and suppressions, exploring the ways in which the first person brings narration itself into the realm of dramatic action and productively exploits the tension between what appears to have been fated and what appears to have been willed. Eleanor Catton is the author of three novels: The Rehearsal, The Luminaries, which won the 2013 Booker Prize, and Birnam Wood. As a screenwriter, she adapted The Luminaries for television and Jane Austen's Emma for a 2020 feature film starring Anya Taylor-Joy. Born in Canada, she grew up in New Zealand and now lives in Cambridge. There will also be a drinks reception after the lecture. Tickets are free and all students, staff and alumni of the University welcome.
