October 29
AA Bookshop, 33 Bedford Square
This new collection of critical essays in the Palgrave-Lacan Series seek to revive architectural theory through psychoanalysis. Its authors argue for the central importance of Lacan’s discourse for a comprehensive theory of building that engages the human subject, and suggest how architectural theory might offer new resources for psychoanalytic theorists. They address the perceived crisis in the contemporary state of architecture and architectural theory as well as crises in society at large, including political and economic fracture and threats to mental health and well-being. It offers fresh insights to architects, architectural educators, scholars of psychoanalysis, and anyone interested in the human condition in relation to the built environment.
We are delighted to welcome the editors John Shannon Hendrix and Francesco Proto and the contributing authors from iPSA, the Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies in Architecture, including Andy Payne, Angie Voela, Don Kunze, Lorens Holm, and Tim Martin, to the AA Bookshop to discuss and celebrate the launch of this new book.
John Shannon Hendrix is Professor of Art and Architectural History at Roger Williams University. He is the author and editor of numerous articles and books including Architecture and the Unconscious (2016, with Lorens Holm) and Architecture and Psychoanalysis (2006).
Francesco Proto is Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Oxford Brookes University, UK. He is the author of numerous articles and books including Baudrillard for Architects (2019).
Teresa Stoppani is Director of Architecture and Interior Design at Norwich University of the Arts, and lectures in History and Theory at the AA. She is the author of Unorthodox Ways to Think the City.
