Speaker: Dr Benjamin Redding

In December 1654 the Cromwellian Western Design sailed from England towards the Caribbean. The campaign experienced unrest, anarchy, and ultimately disaster. Accompanying the Design were a number of officers who held extreme religious and political views. While applying a particular focus to these individuals, Dr Benjamin Redding's paper explores the role and influence of radicalism in the navy during the late Interregnum.

About the speaker

Dr Benjamin Redding is Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of East Anglia. His monograph, The English and French Navies, 1500-1650 was published in 2022. Since 2020, he has researched the life and times of the Gloucester warship as part of the multi-award winning Gloucester Project.
